The Pink Panther 2

Synopsis

If you're a fan of physical comedies, Steve Martin delivers mayhem once again as French Inspector Jacques Clouseau. And if you're a fan of Steve Martin, you'll appreciate his commitment to the film's elaborate, inventive sight gags. The story follows the typical "Pink Panther" formula - pitting Clouseau and his team against an evil mastermind who's swiped a slew of priceless goods. With wall-to-wall antics (firehose wrestling, anyone?) and a strong supporting cast (including Jean Reno, John Cleese, Andy Garcia and Alfred Molina), it's camp with a touch of class. Let's face it, Clouseau's bumbling detective methods are so unbelievably absurd, it's hard not to laugh. And no, he still can't pronounce "hamburger."

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. When asked to reprise the role of Inspector Jacques Clouseau, Steve Martin didn't have to think twice - he said yes immediately because he loved the character and the opportunity to do physical comedy. I like that he needed an excuse to fall down a lot on camera.
  2. The first scene in The Pink Panther 2 features two James Bond alums - John Cleese and Geoffrey Palmer. Seeing as The Pink Panther 1 featured a spoof of James Bond, it seemed like an appropriate opener.
  3. Writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel were hired to perform an uncredited rewrite and polish of The Pink Panther script in January 2007. In other words, they were brought in to fix the script.
  4. Even though The Pink Panther 2 was set in France, had a French lead character, and starred Jean Reno, one of France's most beloved actors, the film still bombed in France. Apparently the French don't like themselves.
  5. Apparently, looks really can kill: Sonia, the murdering villain, is played by Aishwarya Rai. Rai is thought of by many to be the most beautiful woman in the world.
  6. The Pink Panther is actually the name of a diamond that is stolen in 1963 version of the movie. Even though the diamond has become synonymous with subsequent films bearing the Pink Panther name, there is actually no connection other than the opening credits. The same can be said for the familiar cartoon character.
  7. Who knew that the City of Beans had so many things in common with the City of Lights? Apparently, there were enough similarities that Boston doubled for Paris in some scenes in The Pink Panther 2.
  8. The Pink Panther 2 was the first Pink Panther sequel to have a number in its title. In reality, it was the eighth Pink Panther movie. Pink Panther 8 doesn't sound nearly as catchy.
  9. Comedians John Cleese and Steve Martin didn't have much opportunity to utilize their improvising skills during filming of The Pink Panther 2. Instead, they were forced to get all their excess energy out of their systems during rehearsals. Luckily, Robin Williams was not cast.
  10. Jean Reno hearts Steve Martin. It was Steve Martin's casting that convinced popular French actor Jean Reno to reprise his role in the comedy, The Pink Panther 2.
