Stop Loss

Synopsis

Staff Sergeant Brandon King served his country - but his country's not done with him. The war in Iraq collides with a small Texas town in this politically charged drama, as local hero played by Ryan Phillippe is forced into another life-threatening tour of duty, thanks to the U.S. military’s controversial “stop-loss” policy. “It’s a back door draft, that’s what it is,” he rages - come to think of it, Back Door Draft might have made a better title, although it risks being mistaken for an adult reimagining of a Ron Howard firefighter movie. Bottom line: is fighting for your country the honorable thing to do when your country isn’t behaving honorably? Leave it to the director of Boys Don’t Cry to come up with as many questions as answers.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Stop-Loss stars Abbie Cornish and Ryan Phillippe are a couple on and off the big screen. The actors met on the film set while Phillippe was still married. Media have speculated that the couple was actually creating a Brangelina sequel during the film's down times.
  2. Ryan Phillippe's girlfriend in Stop-Loss, Abbie Cornish, was named Australia's sexiest vegetarian in 2008. The Hunter Valley, New South Wales native has nourished herself with sexy vegetables like cucumbers and rutabagas since she was thirteen.
  3. Boys Don't Cry director Kimberly Peirce directed Stop-Loss. The film could have been called "Boys Do Cry" after the many tears shed by American servicemen who had their tours of duty involuntarily extended in Iraq.
  4. Filming of Stop-Loss began in August 2006, but the film was not released until March 28, 2008. The studio did not waste as much time releasing the DVD. It was available for purchase just three months after the theatrical premiere.
  5. The title of the film Stop-Loss refers to a clause in military contracts that says a soldier's length of service can be "involuntarily" extended. Instead of being discharged from the military, servicemen can be obligated to discharge guns overseas indefinitely.
  6. Mark Richard must have developed writer's cramp from writing more than 65 drafts of the Stop-Loss' script. If you lay each copy down on the street side by side, it would take up a writer's block.
  7. Stop-Loss was partially filmed in Morocco during Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. I wonder what they did with the craft services table...
  8. Actress Maggie Siff was stiffed when her single scene was deleted from the final version of Stop-Loss.
  9. A hammer sound can be heard from the Glock handgun pointed at the lead character's head in the movie Stop-Loss. One problem, a Glock doesn't have a hammer. (To clarify, the 'hammer' of a firearm was given its name for both resemblance and functional similarity to the common tool. The function of the hammer is to strike the firing pin in a firearm).
  10. Stop-Loss was a big loss that studio executives probably wished they had stopped. The film grossed less than half of what it cost to make it, leaving the filmmakers $14 million in the hole.
