For Your Eyes Only

Synopsis

Roger Moore returns as the man with a license to kill in the 12th James Bond film-and this time, it's personal. Okay, not really. 007 is on the hunt for a weapons activation system capable of turning the Western world into kibbles 'n bits; unfortunately, it's somewhere on the ocean floor. Buxom babes and elaborate getaways abound in what is mostly standard Bond fare, although who can resist the Sheena Easton theme song?

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Steven Spielberg was interested in directing a James Bond film and was in the middle of talks with For Your Eyes Only producer Albert R. Broccoli when George Lucas offered Spielberg the opportunity to direct Raiders of the Lost Ark. And the rest, as they say, is history.
  2. Even stars need liquid courage - Roger Moore admitted chasing a Valium with a beer before some of the terrifying scenes in which he has to climb up a mountain. It's ok, Rog, well all get nervous.
  3. It was during the production of For Your Eyes Only that actress and Bond Girl Cassandra Harris introduced her husband to James Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli. Years later, her husband, Pierce Brosnan, would fill James Bond's famous shoes in four Bond films.
  4. Remember the underwater scenes with Carole Bouquet and Roger Moore? Well, they weren't really underwater at all. They were filmed in a studio with a fan blowing at them to give the impression that her hair was floating. The footage was then shown in slow motion and as a final touch, bubbles were added in post-production to complete the effect. Ahh, the magic of movies!
  5. An order of monks almost completely halted production on the James Bond film For Your eyes Only. Displeased with the violence in the film, the monks placed sheets and plastic on the roof of their monastery to create an eye-sore for the Bond filmmakers who were using the area as a shooting location. A local court told the monks to clean up their act and soon after, the filming continued.
  6. Rappers aren't the only ones who sample music. For Your Eyes Only was the third Bond movie to borrow theme songs from other famous movies. The Spy Who Loved Me used tunes from Lawrence of Arabia, Moonraker usurped the theme from The Magnificent Seven and this film pirated the famous "DUM-DUM... DUM-DUM" of Jaws.
  7. Roger Moore must have a thing for storming mountaintop monasteries!  He managed that feat once before For Your Eyes Only. The first was in Escape to Athena in which Moore played a Nazi. It's nice to see Moore made the switch from bad guy to good!
  8. The James Bond franchise has had a long-standing relationship with Playboy magazine. For Your Eyes Only featured a cameo by Robbin Young, winner of Playboy's "Be a James Bond Girl" competition. Along with the cameo, the prize included a photo-spread in the magazine where, for only the price of the magazine, Young's physique was available for viewing by many eyes.
  9. As in past James Bond movies, producers wanted to include famous landmarks in the film For Your Eyes Only. However, the Greek Government was not as obliging as those in Istanbul and Cairo. The Government did not grant the filmmakers permission to shoot at the iconic Parthenon in Athens.
  10. Bond has saved a lot of people over the years, but did you know he also saved United Artists? The studio was struggling after a flop left United on the verge of filing for bankruptcy. Thankfully, For Your Eyes Only brought in over 194 Million dollars and rescued United from the perils of debt. See, Bond helps people besides damsels in distress!
