Cloverfield

Synopsis

During an alien invasion of apocalyptic proportions, it's probably not a good idea to run in the direction of the screaming, chaos and collapsing buildings... or toward the monster meaner than Godzilla that's wreaking havoc on Manhattan. But that's what happens when four insanely brave (or seriously stupid) friends attempt to rescue Rob's ex-girlfriend who's trapped in her Upper West Side apartment. While the military swarms in to fend off unparalleled devastation, Rob and his friends get caught in the crossfire and capture on home video the most horrifying journey of their lives.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. At the beginning of the film during the party scene you can see a guy wearing a Slusho! T-Shirt. It's an homage to a soda from JJ Abrams TV show Alias. Sadly, Slusho! Soda is not available for purchase, however, the DVD for the show Alias is.
  2. It took 34 days to shoot "Cloverfield" under the fake names "Slusho" and "Cheese." Apparently the New York crew was slushy and the California crew was cheesy.
  3. The title "Cloverfield" came from a street located near director J.J. Abrams' office in Southern California. There are no clovers or fields along Cloverfield Boulevard in Santa Monica. Fitting, since there is no street named Cloverfield in the film.
  4. Audiences who saw the teaser trailer for Cloverfield experienced a preview for a yet to be named, yet to be filmed movie. In short, the audience saw an advertisement for... nothing.
  5. Some theatres received their copy of the film under the name "Bertha." Apparently the names Gertrude and Hilda were already taken.
  6. Film critic Roger Ebert referred to Cloverfield's shaky filming technique as "Queasy-Cam" and many theaters warned that the film's hand-held camera movements might cause motion sickness. Barf bags were not provided, however, if popcorn bags could hold gobs of warm, gooey butter, then I'm sure they could hold... well, you get the picture.
  7. Specially-trained and charcoal-dyed rats were used in the Subway tunnel scene. And there were a lot of them. A lot.
  8. After Cloverfield's credits, audio can be heard from a video camera that sounds like, "Help us". When played backward, it says, "It's still alive!" Plans for a Cloverfield II are said to be already in the works.
  9. Screen shots from film classics King Kong, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, and Them! were embedded within "Cloverfield." Each image is presented for only one frame, bringing new meaning to the phrase, "Don't blink or you'll miss it."
  10. Cloverfield director J.J. Abrams felt America was lacking in an iconic monster like Japan's beloved Godzilla so he decided to make his own creature feature. At the time of the film's release, some people may have argued that America already had its own National Monster.
