Bubba Ho-Tep

Synopsis

Bruce Campbell is an aging and cantankerous "Elvis" and Ossie Davis believes he is "JFK." When mysterious deaths plague a Texas retirement home, it's up to the unlikely duo of a sequined senior citizen and presidential persona to take on a 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummy with a penchant for cowboy boots, bathroom graffiti and sucking the souls from the barely living.

Top 10 Fun Facts

  1. Oops, I hate it when this happens. Yep, that's a mic you see in the window reflection during the bathroom stall scene. I'm just glad it was a mic - just sayin'.
  2. Wondering where the name Bubba Ho-Tep cam from? So was I - it was a novella from The King is Dead: Tales of Elvis Post Mortem.
  3. Cult hero Reggie Bannister had a cameo. What...that means nothing to you?
  4. Elvis described his medicine bag in "Bubba Ho-Tep" as "mucho mojo." This is the title of another book by "Bubba Ho-Tep" author Joe R. Lansdale. Another of Lansdale's books could have been easily referenced if the characters ate some "bad chili."
  5. At one point, filmmakers considered making a sequel to "Bubba Ho-Tep" called "Bubba Nosferatu." Although a variety of actors have been attached to the film, the film is currently as dead as the vampire Nosferatu. Not quite alive, but not quite dead. It may be made. It may not be made.
  6. As part of Bubba Ho-Tep's limited release, just thirty-two prints were made and distributed on the festival circuit. The film developed such buzz that the Soul of Southern Film Festival in Memphis, Tennessee paid for a thirty third print, so that they wouldn't have to wait any longer to show the film. No doubt filmgoers were saying, "Thank you, Thank you very much."
  7. Apparently abandoned veterans' hospitals and trailer parks have enough in common that they can be mistaken for each other on film. Most of "Bubba Ho-Tep" was shot at an abandoned veterans' hospital outside of Los Angeles. Even the trailer park explosion was shot there (and luckily, in one take).
  8. Congrats to Bruce Campbell for his Best Actor award in 2005! Oh no not an Oscar® Best Actor an International Fantasy Film Awards Best Actor.
  9. "A Little Less Conversation" and a little more cash might have gotten some Elvis music in the movie. The licensing costs proved prohibitive.
  10. Bruce Campbell, aka "The Chin", got the nickname for his huge jawbone.
